The vigorous period of Orientalist painting coincides, more or less, with the life span of the Realist movement in painting, from its first beginnings in academic practice, to its replacement by the various anti-realist movements of the last quarter of the 19th century. When applied to painters the word ‘Orientalist’ indicates artists who painted subjects from the Near and Middle East, that is, from North Africa, Asia Minor and occasionally the Turkish-dominated parts of the Balkan Peninsula, all Islamic territories. This is a large geographic area, filled with a variety of peoples and cultures with distinct histories. This usage of the term is essentialy French.
