The first monograph from iconic London-based fashion photographer Aldridge is an excellent collection of thought-provoking, color-soaked images that will likely stay with the reader long after they’ve closed the book. Bereft of any copy save for a glowing introduction by Glenn O’Brien (printed in hot pink type), Aldridge lets his images speak for themselves crisply composed shots of ladies in peril, vignettes of couture-clad women and children with oceans of emotional distance between them, glimpses of sordid passion, and Bacchanalian evenings all viewed through Aldridge’s hyper-saturated and sometimes neon-bright lens, give many of the shots a surreal, Barbie doll like quality exemplified by the early images of a vacant, detached soccer mom tending to her injured son and a beige automaton going about mundane office duties. Viewed individually (many of the images have appeared in Vogue, the New Yorker, and other publications), Aldridge’s work can take on a sharp, commercial quality. When viewed collectively, the cinematic quality and scope expands, making for an immersive study.
